MEAKULTURA.PL
THE INTERVIEW
You took part in the auction of the interview for meakultura.pl for The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity and won it - congratulations on behalf of the entire MEAKULTURA Foundation team! Are you close to helping others?
For me, helping others means sharing what we can give to another person completely selflessly, showing what is hidden deep in the heart - just like in music. In today's world, it is sometimes difficult to stop in the rush of everyday life and notice what is most valuable, namely relationship with another person. The sound is the link of souls, and the gesture makes two human hearts closer to each other.
On your website we can read that the most important thing in music are the emotions that you try to share with the audience, with every person who allows you to take them where they haven't been before. I understand that the piano is a tool to achieve this goal. What is special about this instrument for you?
The piano, as an instrument, has great potential, for example in terms of timbre, which, depending on the pianist's touch, can be more warm and enveloping or transparent and penetrating when the narrative requires it. But the real and seldom discussed issue of the piano's capabilities is its peculiar camouflage ability. It sounds puzzling, but this aspect really sets it apart from other instruments. It is not without reason that so many transcriptions of great orchestral works have been translated into piano, and in the hands and imagination of the pianist there is a whole spectrum of colors that can be extracted from it, supposedly imitating the deep sound of double basses or fluttering fioritures of delicate sounds of the flute.
Which moments in your life, in terms of art, have been the most important for you so far?
I would like to be able to mention here all the artistic events that I had the opportunity to live and experience, because each of them has a great emotional meaning for me, but a special place in my musical life was playing as a soloist in the performance of Fryderyk Chopin's Fantasia on Polish Themes accompanied by the Lviv Cameral Orchestra. The moment when a pianist meets such a great formation as an orchestra and has the opportunity to create a joint interpretation of a work is definitely a priceless and unforgettable experience in the life of every musician. Another amazing event that I would like to mention, which broadened my musical horizons and perception of the world of sounds, was my participation in the international music course Chamber Music Masterclass - Mendelssohn Musik Woche Wengen in Switzerland. Communicating directly with passionate musicians and working on pieces in a beautiful, picturesque place high in the mountains allowed me to see how close the relationship between music and nature is, as well as the great importance of silence, which sometimes needs space surrounded by sound and should be given this possibility.
Currently, you are a student of the second year of master's studies at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, so your diploma recital is waiting for you in a moment. This is certainly an important moment for the musician. How are diplomas in a pandemic different from those played in such specific circumstances?
I had this unique and priceless opportunity to open my 1st Diploma Recital to the public and I will never forget this feeling when, going on stage, I saw a real, live audience, knowing that this is the
last day of open concert halls. Another scheduled lockdown followed the next day. This intangible bond, when the music moves every particle of the air, vibrating strings not only make a sound, but also make the whole instrument resonate, as well as every other element - from the wooden boards of the stage, through soft, velor armchair upholstery, to the submerged in the abyss of sounds the listener is incomparable. Online concerts differ in what is most important in creating a stage image with sound - primarily the lack of a personal and impossible to achieve in any other way relationship between the performer and the audience. That is why I am so grateful and happy that I was able to experience music together with the audience, at least to a limited extent. My 2nd Diploma Recital is now being prepared and I really hope, like all of us, that we are getting closer to returning to normality, perhaps new, but certainly very much appreciated by us.
How have you been coping and still coping in this culturally difficult situation?
We are all waiting impatiently for the imminent return of what is known, comfortable and safe for us, to re-experience joint meetings, conversations with words or music. During the pandemic, a completely new, virtual world of communication has been created, in which many artists are trying to find a place for themselves. Thus, on the initiative of the excellent pianist Mrs. Dominika Glapiak, the third edition of the National Student Artistic and Scientific Conference "We play together in the 2020 pandemic" was created, this time in the online version, during which in the formation of a piano duo with an extraordinary artist, and privately my close friend XueEr Sun, we took part in a concert recording of our musical interpretation, and also exchanged our reflections on the uniqueness of sharing one keyboard by two pianists. Despite various circumstances, it was at that time that the DraMuz Piano Quartet formation, which we create together with friends, had its debut. We had the opportunity to present the repertoire prepared by us during an audiovisual broadcast on Radio Gdańsk - the broadcast took place via the Radio's website and on Facebook. And soon, at the end of April, if conditions allow, I will have this unique opportunity to perform Fryderyk Chopin's Piano Concerto in F minor with the accompaniment of the National Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and participate in the International Piano Forum "Bieszczady without Borders". This is a huge undertaking prepared by the organizers for a very long time and I must admit that we all keep our fingers crossed that the situation in Poland and in the world will allow us to meet live in the spring. My 2nd Diploma Recital and the project of a concert tour for the 2021/2022 artistic season are now being prepared and I really hope, as probably all of us, that we are getting closer to returning to normality, perhaps new and in some way still unknown, but certainly very appreciated by us.
Let's assume that you get an offer to play a concert in your dream place. Where would it be and what repertoire would you choose?
My heart has always been guided by the belief that unique places are created by people, and my dream place is where I can share music and emotions, create a unique, different world created together with listeners at a given moment. Each time it looks completely different, because each performance is a separate story that I tell, and therefore even the same repertoire played in a different place, with a different audience will sound completely different. This is what is so amazing about live performances that the aura is unrepeatable, each time so unique and personalthanks to this bond that connects me with every person who immerses me in the magic of sounds. With a special adoration I reach for the music of the period of classicism and romanticism, but the more I explore its secrets, the more I am curious about the relationships that later music brought. I rediscover the music of Franciszek Schubert, which uniquely combines what fascinates me in the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, namely the coherence of harmony and dynamic expression, and in the works of Fryderyk Chopin, extremely emotional and in a way intimate. And this is the most beautiful thing about music, that each composer has given his work his own, peculiar and unique element, which, combined with the interpretation, character and emotionality of the performer, gives a completely different, unique effect each time.
